The Relationship Between Data Logging Technology & General Supply Chain Processes:

Data logging solutions have a variety of applications, primarily assisting in the tracking of goods throughout supply chains and transportation. Over the past decade enormous strides have been taken to incorporate such technology into general supply chain processes.

The supply chain can be defined as a vast global network comprised of individuals and companies who are involved in the production and delivery of goods. A branch of supply chain that pertains specifically to the transportation of temperature-sensitive products is known as the cold chain. Both supply chain and cold chain management consist of a series of steps that are tailored to individual company’s needs, these stages include planning, manufacturing, testing, packing/storage, transportation, and finally delivery/returns. These integral processes require constant revision and updating in order to lower costs, increase productivity and maintain a lean business model.

One of the most important technological elements that has been introduced into both supply chain and cold chain management is known as data logging. Data logging is the process of utilising a device to monitor and collect data based on a range of vital metrics. These innovative solutions are able to collect data on location, temperature, humidity, tampering, and shock.

The data can then be analysed to determine how to streamline and therefore enhance business processes in order to achieve growth and advancement for any given company. The devices utilised in the data collection process are known as data loggers. Industry sectors that make the most use out of these innovative solutions include pharmaceuticals, cold chain logistics, and perishable goods such as food. As their relationship with supply chain and cold chain logistics further develops, data logging technology will continue to advance and transform based on the needs of the global industries.

Three Ways That Data Loggers Has Transformed Supply Chain & Cold Chain Management So Far:

Data loggers are a key component in track and trace processes helping to bring greater visibility and efficiency in decision making throughout supply chains & logistics operations. There are a variety of advantages that can come from incorporating them into a client’s business processes. Here are three examples of the impact they can have on a company:

1. Collecting data on vital metrics of goods in live shipments:

Data loggers have the ability to track vital metrics and notify the client if there are any issues during transit. For example, if perishable goods such as food & beverages are being transported from a warehouse to a distribution facility and happen to experience a number of shock violations, the client is immediately notified and if action needs to be taken this can occur. In some cases, packaging of products can be damaged if shock experienced is significant enough.  This not only saves a significant amount of time and money, but it also limits waste which in turn encourages greater sustainable practices.

2. Tracking items that are in the process of reverse logistics:

Many clients that require track and trace solutions are logistics providers. These clients provide specialised containers, crates, and boxes that their customers can utilise to store and transport their goods. However, these reusable assets can sometimes become damaged, lost, or are never returned. In order to remedy this, having a data logging solution attached to each reusable asset can ensure that they will be returned safely or at least retrieved quickly and easily if lost or misplaced. The client can also understand where their assets are at any point of time. Data loggers can help streamline the return process and ensure loss is avoided.

3. Monitoring the conditions of goods in cold storage facilities:

Data logging devices not only have the ability to track live and moving shipments, they can also be utilised to monitor temperature and humidity conditions in cold storage facilities. They can also be used for warehouse temperature mapping, during which data loggers are placed throughout a cold storage facility to collect temperature data to ensure that the thermal climate remains stable throughout the warehouse. Being able to automate the monitoring of cold storage facilities ensures action can be taken at any point of time if set parameters are violated and allows any stakeholders to be notified as soon as possible.
