Drone technology has emerged greatly in the last few years. The technology at first was simply for leisurely use. Now we are seeing drone technology being used to positively impact many industries such as logistics, agriculture, and the military. One problem that we are now faced with, is congestion on our roads. Congestion is progressively getting worse as our global population grows even further.
The United Nations
states that the world’s population is currently 7.7 billion, which is expected to grow to 9.7 billion in 2050. Not only are we faced with the increasing number of cars on the road, but we are also faced with problems such as accidents and a growing number of road work projects leading to significant delays.
Now is the time to start leveraging drone technology to solve this problem of congestion on our roads. Drone technology has been explored in the past however society at the time was not ready for such an evolution in last mile delivery. The technology was explored back in 2012 such as projects labelled as the ‘Tacocopter’ and the ‘Burrito Bomber’ in the US.
As more people are becoming reliant on e-commerce sites and delivery with the ever-increasing focus on work and the convenience of online shopping, it’s no wonder why a solution needs to be innovated to cater for the increased amount of delivery trucks and vans on our roads.
Statista
states that it is predicted that consumers will spend 3.5 trillion on e-commerce in 2019. Where does this leave us on congested roads?
It’s important to remember the capabilities of drone technology. For example, currently drones are capable of last mile delivery in other words delivery within short distances. Drones are yet to have the capability of long ranges and in many cases various countries have restricted the use of drones for several reasons. The use of drones can significantly impact the environment positively by removing the number of trucks and vans off our roads ultimately reducing emissions from these vehicles.
Although we must be wary that more warehouses may be needed in order to serve last mile deliveries. This points to where warehouses should be located and where last mile delivery should be offered. As many could guess by now, they should be located within cities around the world therefore significantly reducing congestion within cities. The use of drones for last mile delivery not only promotes environmental benefits but better air quality for citizens living in the city as emissions will be decreased.
Drone delivery could host a number of benefits for companies who utilise the emerging technology. Increasing efficiency, workflow and exceeding customer’s needs are just to name a few. Drivers may worry about their immediate jobs; however, they could be utilised for other deliveries that are not in the immediate area effectively lightening their load and decreasing the pressure on them to increasingly meet the number of orders to be delivered. If drivers can be better utilised then labour costs and costs associated with fuel consumption can significantly be improved.
Utilising emerging technology allows companies to exceed delivery options and time frames to their loyal customers. It is not simply about utilising the technology we have at our hands; it now becomes the question of how do we utilise it in a way to help solve our problems that we are currently experiencing not only for companies but also for cities with unbearable congestion issues.
As new technology is emerging every day and the technology that we have today only gets smarter, it’s only a matter of time that drone technology is advanced even further. Last mile delivery will surely be used widely, and deliveries over longer distances may become possible. Such possibilities are endless. A great example of the further developing technology is the use of renewable energy or low carbon electricity to charge drones, which in turn significantly reduces the impact on the environment. Technology is helping us to become more efficient overtime. The opportunities are endless with emerging technology today.
It can become possible to solve some cities largest problems on our roads if we all work together. The government, industry and companies need to come together ultimately to improve the way business can be done in particular de-congesting our roads. If we have already advanced this far, think of the possibilities in the future to solve the problems that we experience today with new emerging technology.
