The Importance Of Supply Chain Visibility For The Meat Industry

Adapt Ideations • Jun 07, 2021

Growing trends and overall supply chain challenges highlights that supply chain visibility and greater traceability is becoming an increasingly important requirement for companies, suppliers, and clients within the industry.

The meat industry has a highly complex supply chain due to the perishable nature of meat and the number of processes that it must go through from farm to the end consumer or client. The complexity of the supply chain management highlights that greater near real-time visibility needs to be developed in order to understand if and when supply chain issues occur. Supply chain visibility into the entire meat supply chain provides companies within the industry and the industry as a whole with both a competitive advantage and greater trust between companies, suppliers, and their clients.

A report released by MLA in 2019 found that Australia was the largest exporter of sheep meat in 2018 and exported over 1.1 million live cattle in the same year. The value of Australia’s beef and veal exports equated to approximately AUD$10.8 billion in 2019, as further highlighted by MLA. Evidently, Australia’s beef exports are significant to our economic growth and the quality of our meat garners global demand. However, the complex supply chain of meat must be monitored to ensure that challenges within the supply chain such as temperature excursions does not occur. The use of asset tracking solutions allows greater visibility and traceability to be achieved for companies within the meat industry in addition to ensuring food safety regulations are adhered to.

Supply chain challenges caused by dynamic market forces is a prevalent issue that can greatly affect the meat industry. Food manufacturers today face unprecedented challenges when it comes to exporting fresh produce at such high global demands. This is particularly relevant to the meat industry as the global meat and poultry consumption levels are expected to reach 313 million metric tons in 2023 as reported by Business Wire in 2020. This indicates further growth of beef exports and other types of meat from countries such as Australia, which are globally known for their high quality beef. However, growing trends and overall supply chain management challenges highlights that food supply chain visibility and greater traceability is becoming an increasingly important requirement for companies, suppliers, and clients within the industry.

Greater supply chain visibility will enable the meat industry to respond to tightening government regulations and compliance measures

The Australian and New Zealand Food Standard Code legislates the measures that must be taken for all companies involved in the industry. Chapter 4, section 4.2 of the code dictates how all poultry and primary red meat food production companies must ensure food traceability can be identified. Through enhanced supply chain visibility, companies can ensure they comply with these government regulations. Furthermore, greater traceability enables companies to ensure the product has been handled correctly and monitor vital conditions that the product undergoes. Strict regulations and standards put in place highlight the importance of traceability for the industry and allow companies to understand if supply chain challenges are occurring. Greater traceability and supply chain visibility allows companies within the industry to also strengthen their relationships with suppliers and clients.

Enhanced supply chain visibility can reduce supply chain inefficiencies occurring for a prolonged time such as temperature excursions

Utilising IoT enabled asset trackers allows the viability of high value products be monitored in near real-time and collect vital data. Within the industry, there have been occurrences of meat substitution during global exportation although incredibly rare. Cases have occurred whereby high value beef and meat products are being swapped out with inferior quality meat. This action is illegal and causes great supply chain issues and can have serious financial implications for companies involved. With the implementation of asset tracking solutions during logistics processes, this issue can be detected and necessary action can be taken to improve systems as well as highlight necessary changes in other areas such as improving a company's carbon footprint.

At Adapt Ideations, our solutions are catered towards providing companies with the best tools needed to combat challenges experienced in the supply chain such as visibility and traceability. Temperature-controlled logistics is a crucial aspect of global supply chains, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. Maintaining the correct temperature during transportation is not just a logistical issue but also a critical factor in ensuring the safety and efficacy of life-saving vaccines and other temperature-sensitive products. As the demand for temperature-sensitive products like vaccines and biologics continues to surge, ensuring their safe transportation is paramount. Any deviation in temperature during transit can compromise the efficacy of these products, leading to significant financial losses and potential health risks. This blog delves into the evolution of temperature-controlled logistics, critical challenges faced in this sector, and groundbreaking innovations that address these challenges. With a focus on real-time monitoring through IoT solutions, we aim to showcase the advancements that contribute to the efficiency and compliance of global pharmaceutical supply chains. Evolution of Temperature-Controlled Logistics Temperature control has undergone a remarkable transformation in the last two decades. Stringent global regulations, customer demand for new temperature ranges, emerging markets with extreme temperatures, and the growing value of drugs like biologics have been essential driving forces. These factors have spurred the evolution of temperature-controlled logistics to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. The landscape of temperature-controlled logistics is evolving, thanks to technological advancements. Trends include the growing availability of prequalified shippers simplifying the validation process, sophisticated supply chain services, a rising interest in reusable packaging, and advances in temperature-monitoring technology. These innovations contribute to the industry's ability to adapt and thrive in a dynamic environment. Temperature-controlled logistics involves managing the flow of products through a cold chain. Divided into food and pharmaceutical sectors, the global market size of cold chain logistics is projected to grow significantly. From USD 242.39 billion in 2021 to USD 647.47 billion by 2028, exhibiting a CAGR of 15.1%, the industry is expanding rapidly, reflecting its critical role in modern commerce. 3 Key Challenges in Temperature-Controlled Logistics Compliance Issues Stringent Regulatory Standards: Global temperature-controlled logistics operates within a framework of strict regulations set by health and safety authorities. Meeting diverse regulatory requirements across international borders poses a significant challenge for companies in this sector. Documentation & Reporting: Compliance involves meticulous documentation and reporting of temperature-sensitive shipments. Keeping up with the evolving documentation standards requires streamlined processes and robust systems. Validation & Qualification: Ensuring the validation and qualification of equipment and processes according to regulatory standards is an ongoing challenge. The need for continuous validation adds complexity and time constraints to logistics operations. Risks of Temperature Deviations Product Integrity: Temperature-sensitive products, especially pharmaceuticals and biologics, are highly susceptible to temperature deviations. Even brief exposure to temperature breaches during transit can compromise the integrity and efficacy of these products. Financial Implications: Temperature deviations can lead to significant financial losses for companies. Replacing or disposing of compromised products and potential legal repercussions contribute to financial challenges. Supply Chain Disruptions: Temperature deviations can disrupt the entire supply chain, leading to delays in product availability. This not only affects businesses but can have critical implications for healthcare providers and patients relying on timely access to medications. Security & Theft Concerns Value of Cargo: Temperature-sensitive cargo, such as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and high-value perishable goods, can become a target for theft. The significant value of these products heightens security concerns throughout the supply chain. Vulnerability During Transit: The vulnerability of cargo during transit, particularly in unsecured areas, poses a constant risk. The potential for theft during transportation adds complexity to securing temperature-controlled shipments. Need for Tracking & Monitoring: Ensuring the security of temperature-sensitive cargo requires robust tracking and monitoring systems. Integrating security features, such as real-time location tracking and tamper-evident technologies, is essential to mitigate theft risks. In navigating the intricate landscape of temperature-controlled logistics, companies must address these multifaceted challenges to uphold compliance, safeguard product integrity, and ensure the security of valuable shipments. Innovative solutions, such as advanced monitoring technologies and comprehensive security measures, are crucial in overcoming these challenges and fostering a resilient and efficient supply chain.
